Although I am an inveterate whodunnit-solver, I was attracted to this
novel by the “Wizard of Evesham” in the title. Luckily so because, after
the novelty has worn off and you have traced all of the references to The
Almonry, The Lantern, Badsey, Four Pools, Cheltenham Road etc., this novel
is a great disappointment. The plot is simple and summed up by the
publisher as: “After ruining her hair with a home dye-job, the churlish
but charming Agatha Raisin heads for the town's gossipy and suspicious
hairdresser, only to find him dead in the middle of his shop, killed by
poison-laced vitamins”. Plot development and characterisation are poor
and the novel is boring, far-fetched and cliché-ridden. There
is not even the tinge of humour that marked the earlier volumes in the
Agatha series. Agatha is supposed to be a feisty businesswoman who retired
early and moved down to the Cotswolds where she eases her boredom by
solving murders. Sadly, in this novel she remains a two-dimensional and
faintly dippy character who staggers through the story, blundering from
crisis to crisis, with frequent pauses to wallow in self-pity. As for the
mystery, well that fell flat. Either I am getting better at solving
mysteries or the plot was too transparent because I spotted the murderer
at their first appearance. This book was quick to read and did not
require a lot of thought; read it for the novelty but do not expect Agatha
Christie! |
