The building from the
west (from May's History of Evesham, 1845)
Published by the Vale of Evesham Historical Society in 1975, "The Almonry
Museum" is available in booklet form, with plans of the Almonry and
additional photographs, from the Heritage Centre for the very modest cost
of 50p. Although still often called "the Almonry Museum", since 1996
it has officially been the "Almonry Heritage Centre". The following
pages have been abstracted from the booklet.
The Vale of Evesham
Historical Society
The Society was founded in 1950
(sic). It
exists to encourage the study of history and archaeology in the Vale of
Evesham and does so through its management of the Almonry
Museum, its programme of winter lectures at the museum, and the publication of
its journal. Research Papers. Details of membership can be obtained from
the Hon. Treasurer of the Society at the
Almonry
Museum, Evesham, Worcestershire. A current list of the Society's publications
will be sent on application to the Publications Manager at the same
address.
The Almonry Museum
Since the museum
exhibits are individually labelled and are subject to re-arrangement from
time to time it is not necessary or possible to provide here an inventory
of them room by room. This guide puts forward two things: first, a
chronological outline of the collections enabling the visitor to take away
some permanent record of what he has seen and giving the intending visitor
a succinct impression of what he may expect to find; second, a short
history and architectural description of the building. The museum is owned
by Evesham Town Council and is managed by the Vale of Evesham Historical
Society. The
Society's work enables the local authority to provide in the Vale of
Evesham, for its inhabitants, visitors, and schools, a museum whose
standards and progress would otherwise be unattainable within the revenue
of a small town.
