Below is a list of some of the more popular or useful genealogical related websites on the Net, allowing people all over the world to share their resources and experiences.  List correct at February 2nd 2002.
 

Access to Archives
The A2A website is a resource, which will provide free access to eight million catalogue entries for archives dating from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries and held in national, local and specialist archives via the A2A site by March 2002. The A2A programme is led by the British Library, the Historical Manuscripts Commission and the Public Record Office.
 

Ancestry
A collection of family history data online, including information for beginners on how to get started.
 

Archives Hub
The Archives Hub is a project that aims to make descriptions of archives held in UK universities and colleges available over the Internet.  The records include the archives of universities themselves and the research papers of their staff, records relating to the local history of the area around the institution, and collections of national and international significance. 
 

Australasia Births, Deaths and Marriages Exchange
A resource for genealogists to share information about details contained on birth, death and marriage registrations registered in Australia , New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
 

Australia and New Zealand Passenger Lists
Designed to help family historians locate passenger lists for migrant ships to Australia and New Zealand.
 

Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies
Site to promote, encourage and aid the study of genealogy, heraldry and allied subjects throughout Australia.
 

Battle of Trafalgar deaths
List of officers and men who fought at the battle of Trafalgar.
 

Birmingham and Midland Society of Genealogy and Heraldry
Family history site for the counties of Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire.
 

Census -1901 census online
This site, hosted by the Public Record Office, enables people to access the latest available census online for the first time. The index is available to search free of charge but there is a cost for viewing images of individual pages or transcriptions of the pages. Payment can be made by using a credit or debit card or by purchasing a voucher. Please note that the site has been very busy since it went live on January 1st 2002 and has been experiencing difficulties.
 

Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Search the register of names, service details and places of commemoration for the 1.7 million members of Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World War.
 

Court Service
This site provides details of how to obtain access to probate records held at the Principal Registry of the Family Division, First Avenue House. It also includes links to district probate registries around the country and information on the Court Service.
 

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Web Sites
Site with over 300 pages and 41,700 links to other sites.
 

Familia • Family History Resources in Public Libraries in Britain and Ireland

The UK and Ireland's guide to the genealogical resources in public libraries.
 

Family History in India

A website for people tracing their British, European and Anglo-Indian family history in India, Burma, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
 

Family Search Internet Genealogy Service

World's largest collection of genealogical material online enabling visitors to trace the names of over 400 million ancestors dating back five centuries.
 

Federation of Family History Societies

Includes contact details for local Family History societies, other useful addresses and links.
 

Free BMD

This site is a voluntary project to computerise the General Register Office Indexes to births, marriages, and deaths for England and Wales . The database only covers records from 1837-1901 and is not complete. There are charts to indicate how much of a particular year has been done so far.
 

GENDEX - World Wide Web Genealogical Index

Indexes of WWW databases containing data for over twelve million individuals.
 

General Register Office for Northern Ireland
The main records held are the statutory registers of births, deaths, marriages, still-births and adoptions. The registers themselves are not open to inspection, but information from them is supplied in the form of certificates.
 

General Register Office for Scotland
The General Register Office for Scotland is the UK Government department responsible for the registration of births, marriages, deaths, divorces and adoptions in Scotland, and for carrying out periodic censuses of Scotland 's population.
 

GENUKI's list of surnames
Genealogical pages providing access to listings of surnames covering UK and Ireland.
 

Historic Maps
This site provides a gazetteer to 40,000 places and easy navigation to historic maps dated between 1846-1899. There are approximately 85,000 images available.
 

Immigrant Ship Transcribers' Guild
This site contains ships' passenger lists and a guide to hundreds of sites with information on passengers, ship type, stories and pictures.
 

Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain
This site contains Jewish genealogical records and resources.
 

London Census Surname Index
A site containing pages of the London Census Surname Index with links to various Web pages covering Genealogical Research in England and Wales.
 

Monumental Inscriptions

This site contains information on monumental inscriptions, the genealogy of the Royal Forest of Dean, the genealogy of Nottinghamshire, and the Family History Research service.
 

Railway Ancestors Family History Society

This page provides you with information to help assist anyone who wishes to trace railway ancestors with the Help of the Family History Society.  
 

RootsWeb

Millions of pages of genealogical data, including the RootsWeb surname list containing 723,870 surname entries.  
 

Scots Origins

The Scots Origins database contains fully searchable indexes of the Old Parish Registers of births/baptisms and banns/marriages dating from 1553 to 1854, indexes to the Statutory Registers of births, deaths and marriages from 1855 to 1898. and the index to census records for 1891.  
 

Scottish Genealogy Society

This site contains information on the Scottish Genealogical Society, the Library and Family History Centre, and the Scottish Association of Family History Societies.  
 

Society of Genealogists

The Society of Genealogists offers a unique combination of research material, guidance and support for those interested in family history and the lives of earlier generations. The site also contains information on the Society's Library.  
 

Surname Helper

Surname Helper is a surname engine for queries and surname registrations posted on various genealogy sites.
 

UK and Ireland Genealogical Information Service (GENUKI)

A large collection of genealogical information pages for England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.
 

UK Birth, Deaths and Marriage Exchanges

The UK Births, Deaths and Marriages Exchange provides a forum for unwanted certificates to be offered to people who might want them.
 

Ulster Historical Foundation

The UHF offers a comprehensive ancestral research service, with particular reference to the province of Ulster.
 

West Midlands Links - Genealogy
